Couples Therapy

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
Rumi, adaptare poetica de Coleman Barks

For me, love is one of the most fulfilling human experiences. To love and be loved in a healthy, deep and secure way is a desire that many of us carry throughout our lives. For thousands of years, love has been celebrated in music, recited by poets, explored in literature and captured on canvas. It continues to inspire us, transform us and challenge us.

And yet, building and maintaining a fulfilling romantic relationship is not always easy. Although connection with others is a fundamental human need, loneliness and social disconnection are becoming increasingly important public health concerns. According to the World Health Organization, approximately one in six people worldwide experiences loneliness. Numerous studies show that loneliness and the lack of satisfying social connections are associated with an increased risk of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and physical health problems.

One of the longest-running studies on human development, the Harvard Study of Adult Development, launched in 1938 and still ongoing, has followed participants over several decades, examining their relationships, health and well-being. Its findings highlight the importance of close, meaningful relationships for physical and emotional health and overall life satisfaction.

In this context, I believe couples therapy can play an essential role in supporting animproving relationships. Not only when a couple is going through a crisis, but also when partners wish to understand each other better, deepen their connection and build a more mature and conscious relationship.

Through couples therapy, we can explore together:

– What conscious and unconscious dynamics are creating distance between us and preventing us from building the relationship we desire?
– What is each partner’s contribution to recurring relationship patterns, and how can we transform them?
– How do our early experiences, attachment styles and personality structures influence the way we love and relate to our partner?
– How do we communicate as a couple? What happens when we don't feel heard, and how can we learn to express our thoughts, needs and desires without hurting each other?
– How can we navigate relationship crises such as infidelity, loss of trust or job loss?
– How do we adapt to important life transitions, such as becoming parents, financial difficulties, professional changes or health problems?
– How can we manage conflicts and emotionally reconnect after them?
– How can we overcome difficulties and emotional blocks related to sexuality?
– How can we maintain or rediscover passion, intimacy and sexual desire in a long-term relationship?
– How can we assess the quality of our relationship, our compatibility and the direction in which we want to grow together?

Couples therapy provides a space where partners can look beyond reproaches and defensive positions in order to better understand what is happening between them. The goal is not to establish who is right and who is wrong, but to understand the dynamics of the relationship, identify opportunities for change and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

Sometimes, this process leads to a deeper and more fulfilling relationship. At other times, it helps partners clarify whether they still wish to continue their relationship. In either case, the aim is to help each person make more conscious and responsible decisions about their own life and their relationship.
