About the need to connect

There is no other human need in this world more important than the need to connect. The need to be attached to another, together with another, seen, loved, appreciated, validated, wanted by another is the fundamental need of any human being. When it is in agreement with our needs and who we are, the presence of the other brings us safety, stability, trust, vitality and joy. It gives us resilience and the ability to overcome difficult life situations. We are born from a togetherness and transition into life on earth through the experience of togetherness between mother and fetus. Then, as we grow, we create our own personality and we become Me and You, separate and unique individuals. Thus we gain in individuality and lose in togetherness.

From this state of separation we seek to recreate the feeling of togetherness through friendships, work partnerships, sports and hobbies and any other form of human interaction that creates relationships. And especially through the romantic relationship we try to create that deep, ancestral togetherness whose memory we still have in our deep brain, that union and sticking to the other through which we dissolve in ourselves and lose ourselves in the other.

The period we are going through is a deep attack on this human need. We perceive the other as a potential enemy, a potential threat, we distance ourselves, isolate ourselves, stay away. In a longer or shorter time, this distance will produce depression, anxiety and other emotional imbalances that will be recovered with difficulty and at high costs.

Look for new and creative ways to be with each other, whether we are talking about your partner, children, parents, friends, colleagues, neighbors, etc. Stay in connection and relationship as much as you can, avoid loneliness and emotional isolation. Call a friend when you feel sad and overwhelmed by a life situation. And for those who have spiritual and religious beliefs, I invite you to remember that you are never alone, that beyond us and all around us there is a universe that loves us and protects us at all times.
